11/16/2020 · After upgrade for 20.10 the SO detects Dummy Output or HDMI output only (when I’m connected in my second monitor). When I plug a headset don’t show the menu of detection. So I have to go to terminal and kill pulseaudio (pulseaudio -k) to back to normal.
Sound settings or packages related to the sound system can become corrupt or broken. Many times, deleting the configuration files, reinstalling the sound-related packages, and reloading ALSA and/or PulseAudio can help. These commands can also help fix the Sound settings showing Dummy Output as the audio output.

11/19/2020 · Also in my case the device is not always Dummy Output it can be a different name. Sometimes I even get 3 devices: the dummy one, the wrong one and the correct one. When running the systemctl command I don’t have gdm crash but I already got 2 other problems: gnome control center crash (not a big deal) and once I got complete system lock up …
I was previously having the dummy output issue and was able to fix that by reinstalling PulseAudio but that hasn’t worked for this issue. [edit] Plugged in a USB microphone and the same thing happens, I can select it as an audio input but it doesn’t register any sound. Weirdly though, if I reboot with the microphone installed, it works fine.

3/23/2020 · Look closely in the audio section of the above output . It tells that it is Intel Sunrise Point-LP HD Audio and it has the Linux driver snd_hda_intel and the sound is served with Alsa.
