It’s exactly the same principle as is used in RIAA equalisation where the treble is boosted by 20dB, the bass cut by 20dB on the LP, and the reverse is done by the RIAA equalisation in the phono pre-amp.
Some CD ripping software will detect pre-emphasis flags in the subcode (if the drive supports it) and can apply a digital de-emphasis filter: iTunes (Mac OS & Windows) – recent versions detect pre-emphasis in subcode and apply de-emphasis automatically for both playback and ripping.

8/10/2019 · Hi @davidhendon. The Core nor Unitiserve will do the de – emphasis filter for these very early cd ’s that were mastered in this way. It’s a bit of a pain to detect as the TOC is unreliable to use, so the ripping engine has to track the Q subcode information that is embedded in the CD sub-channel data.
